Shocking answers to 10 most frequently asked questions I get
As you can imagine, I get always the same questions over and over again. To make it easier, I decided to write this article to answer the main questions.
Shocking answers to 10 most frequently asked questions I get
1. Are you rich?
This is definitely the most frequently asked question I get.
No, I am NOT rich.
No, I don’t have rich parents.
No, I don’t have a rich partner.
No, I have not won any lottery.
I believe one does not have to be rich to travel the world. There are many different ways of traveling and you don’t need to pay $1,000 per night at a luxury hotel if you don’t have that money. I am no millionaire. But it’s all about the priorities. I simply put travel before other things. If you’d like to travel more, check out my article about how to save money.
2. How do you earn money to travel the world?
Since March 2011 I have been professionally travel blogging. I was the first Slovak person to start a travel blog, the first to start it in English, and at the same time the first to start making living out of my blog.
Seriously, this blog IS my main JOB.
I do many different things, such as selling ebooks I wrote, doing travel and marketing presentations, raw vegan courses and blogging workshops, public speaking at conferences, working with sponsors etc.
3. What’s your favorite country?
I have no idea why (I might had been an Aztec in my previous life) but Mexico has always been my favorite country. I even chose the Aztec religion to be the topic of my MA University thesis and that was even before my first visit to Mexico. In my opinion, Mexico has it all… from stunning beaches, interesting pyramids, great exotic fruit and coconuts, cute Spanish, pleasant people to guacamole, oh my! If you don’t understand why, read about 26 reasons why I love Mexico.
4. What’s your favorite city?
No doubt, Barcelona. I love so many things about that sunny city! Different beaches, Antoni Gaudi’s architecture, parks, good shopping, la Boqueria market where I can buy tropical fruit and fresh juices and many other things. My first big solo trip was to Barcelona which was maybe yet another reason to make me fall in love with the Catalan capital. If you happen to visit, here you can learn about 30 things to do in Barcelona.
5. Do you have a boyfriend?
No, right now when I’m writing this article I am single. Been single since July 2016. You asking why? First, I am very demanding and I’m not afraid to admit it. Second, I tend to repeat the same mistake and put the guy first while forgetting about myself. That’s not good at all. And third, it’s not that easy to find a partner when you are a professional travel blogger going from one place to another pretty often. Enough said…
6. Do you ever want to settle down?
That’s a tricky question. If you mean ”settle down” as ”really settling down”, then the answer is not for now. At least not in that sense that I would live in 1 place only. I could maybe stay in Slovakia in summer months and then somewhere nice and warm, on the beach during European winter. And leave on many trips here and there. That could be doable. What do you think? :) For sure, I do want to have a family one day.
7. How many countries have you visited?
More than 60, plus many others which I do not count because I haven’t seen much in there or I was there just at the airport. I’ve been to roughly 1/4 of the world. Still a lot to visit, though. You can see some of the countries I’ve been to in the end of the page about me.
8. Who do you travel with?
Most of the time I travel solo because it’s very convenient. I can do what I want and when I want. I don’t need to wait for anyone, I can visit places I am really interested in, I can do meditation in quiet… For example, one of my last solo trips was visiting Karlovy Vary in November 2016 when I worked with the Czech tourism.
However, on some trips I do take my mum or my dad, or my best friends to make them get out of their comfort zone as well. I took my dad to Amritapuri ashram in India, and recently on a 6-week trip to Thailand and Malaysia. My mother was always scared of boats so I took her on 11-day river cruise around Russia. I was invited to go on that cruise and could take a guest so I invited my mum for her birthday.
And randomly, I travel with other travel bloggers when we get invited on press trips in groups. The last trips I’ve done with other bloggers was in Jerusalem and Eilat in March 2017, Coron islands in the Philippines in October or Finnish islands in July in 2016. Usually I work with tourist boards, big travel agencies or hotel chains who invite me on trips together with other bloggers so that’s the only occasion when I travel with more people at once.
9. Aren’t you scared of traveling solo?
No, not really. I could use some moves from Thai boxing I learned in Bangkok if it was really necessary. But seriously, I don’t think there’s much to be scared of. I do listen to my intuition so if I feel something odd about an activity, I just do not do it. I also listen to the locals and when they say I should not go somewhere, I try to avoid the place. You just need your common sense to know what parts of the city to avoid at night. Yes, bad things can happen but if you think positively and smile at the world, the world will smile back at you.
10. Can I travel with you?
Sorry, but in 99% of the cases my answer would be NO.
Why?
It’s a lot easier to travel on my own as I don’t need to do any compromises. I usually need to work online in the evening and at night so it wouldn’t be too much fun with me anyway. Second, I get invited on trips and to stay at hotels to promote so even during the day I work a lot, but not on my laptop. I’m out there taking notes, photos and videos.
And when traveling solo, I do not need to wait for anyone to wake up and go explore with me. I just go…
