5 Reasons to fall in love with camping again
Are you a camper? If so, you’ll know why it’s awesome! But if you have never camped or had a bad experience once, read on to learn why it’s time to give it go.
5 Reasons to fall in love with camping again
1. Nature
The main reason most of us camp is to be in natural surrounds. Escaping the pace of your busy life is also an important chance to decompress and re-energise. Many studies have documented how the effects of nature, especially water, provide restorative benefits. If, like many of us, you don’t live near inspiring green spaces, seek them out… enter camping. Being on undeveloped land also maximises your chance of upping your physical activity, which is another healthy friendly outcome of camping.
2. A chance to unplug
Although you might sneak in some insta-worthy nature shots, by and large, camping is a time to be away from modern technology. Many of us spend an inordinate amount of time behind a screen on a daily basis. Camping puts a cap on tech – by necessity (probably less electricity access) and design (laptop while camping… not so much). Kids who are otherwise restricted to an inner city life also love the chance to potter around and explore their surrounds and they can be as noisy and as mucky as they want.
3. Suits all types
Camping sometimes gets a bad wrap: rain, mosquitoes, dirt, sleeping on the ground. We think all campers should experience a back-to-nature trip at least once in their lives. But stay with us! Invest in or borrow a caravan or camper so you can be on the road with less packing, more space and room for a few buddies. Otherwise, head online and check out the burgeoning glamping market. You’ll find plush canopies with bespoke linen and bedding configurations, catered alfresco packages and if you really want to do nothing: in-room butler assistance.
4. Channeling your inner snail
Forget snail face masks, being snail-like in a travel sense means that when you have your caravan or camper, you have a home to take with you wherever you go. Complete with your towels, your bed and your bathroom! Even if you’re the occasional traveler due to place-based commitments like work and family, simply pop a camper cover over it to protect it from the elements… you’ll be back on the road soon enough. If you prefer a tent, that’s cool too, it’s camping snail-lite style and you’ll appreciate the art of nicely rolled clothes in your hiking backpack.
5. Cost
Camping is the quintessential low-cost travel option. By taking your own supplies you can dramatically save on food costs, accommodation costs and activities (walking and hiking are generally free or very low cost for national park entrance). Don’t feel like you need to have the latest and greatest gear, borrow it if you don’t have all the bits and bobs just yet. Renting an RV or comfortably sleep while living in your van is also one way to get a taste of another type of camping – good for those who struggle with setting up tents time and time again.
