5 Ways to keep healthy and fit while traveling
There’s no question that traveling is a great way to break away from the rigors of the daily grind. The moment you step inside a foreign city or country, it’s easy to let yourself lose and indulge in the location’s local cuisine, nightlife, and culture. Nevertheless, throwing yourself into these new experiences without a care in the world can harm your health. It’s possible that during your entire stay, you’ve eaten nothing but the most decadent of meals and partied the nights away with several drinks in hand. By the time you get home, you’ll be wondering why you have less energy, making it more difficult to return to your daily routine.
Fortunately, you can keep your health in check if you remember to stay healthy and fit while traveling and by following these 5 tips while you’re on a holiday.
1. Stay in a clean travel accommodation
The first thing you need to do is to check in into a clean travel accommodation. When the place you’re staying in is spick-and-span, you’ll be exposed to less harmful elements and pathogens that can make you sick. After all, no one wants to fall ill during their vacation, so it’s best to do your research before reserving a place.
With a quick search, you can find out how different lodgings keep their premises and vicinities clean. Hotels, for example, may implement a clean hotel approach where they follow the highest standards of housekeeping, room cleaning, and overall hygiene and sanitation. Short-term rental properties, on the other hand, may hire a professional cleaning service before and after guests have occupied the space to ensure that the environment is fresh and clean.
2. Do simple workouts when you can
Working out is one of the best ways to keep your energy levels up. When you get your heart pumping and your blood flowing, you’ll be able to enjoy doing more rigorous activities during your trip. Of course, this doesn’t mean that you should hit the gym and lift some weights for hours on end. Doing simple exercises is enough to keep your body and mind healthy.
Here are some workouts you can do in the hotel gym or right inside your room:
-
Yoga – no need for a yoga mat. Yoga can be practiced anywhere.
-
Single-leg squats and lunges
-
Tricep dips
-
Luggage overhead press and rows
-
Elevated planks
-
Jumping jacks
Another great way to get some workouts in is to walk instead of hiring cabs. If the attraction you’re visiting is quite nearby, put on your trusty walking shoes, and take a short stroll to the destination. This way, you’ll be inching closer to the required number of steps you need to take daily even if you don’t have access to a treadmill. This will help reduce your risk of heart disease while you’re also saving money along the way.
If you’ve been following me on my social media, especially on Instagram, then you know, I tend to walk minimum 10,000 steps daily. It’s easier to reach when hiking in the mountains or when exploring a big city. I really walk everywhere I can.

3. Eat properly
There’s nothing wrong with trying out every delicacy the local food scene has to offer. However, eating too much fatty foods or gulping down sugary drinks with every meal will negatively affect your body. Unhealthy eating will not only result in weight gain, but it will also make you feel lethargic throughout your trip. As such, you need to strike a balance when it comes to eating a healthy meal and indulging on treats.
To do this, you first need to remember that you have to eat real food (fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes). It’s best to skip out on the fast food chains and try out the menus in the mom-and-pop restaurants around the area. Most of these establishments serve up hearty home cooked dishes and use fresh and local ingredients in their meals.
Next, don’t make it a habit to eat two bad meals in a row. Eating one cheat meal after the next will just increase the amount of empty carbs, sugar, sodium, and unhealthy fats you’re getting in a day, which also probably means your body won’t get enough nutrients to function properly. Always when possible, choose a plant-based meal.
Lastly, you’ll want to pack healthy snacks when you’re out seeing the sights. Treats like nuts and raw bars will keep you feeling full and energized while in transit, which means you’ll be more unlikely to overeat on your next meal.
4. Party reasonably
You can still enjoy the nightlife of a place you’re visiting, but you need to set some limits. Alcohol isn’t the healthiest thing for you, and staying up till the sun rises will tire out your body even more quickly, so you have to be smart when you’re out partying.
Instead of chugging down multiple bottles of beer, stick to only consuming one for the night. If you don’t want to control the amount of alcohol you’re taking but still want to get a buzz, you can slowly sip on wine and liquor. Stay away from sugary mixed drinks or alcoholic beverages that have energy drinks mixed in as they won’t do your body any favors. Instead, they leave you dehydrated and intensify your hangover symptoms. But fret not, for there’s a powerful solution at hand: IV hydration therapy. If you find yourself in the vicinity of Los Angeles, consider opting for IV hydration near LA area to swiftly replenish your body with hydration and rejuvenating energy, even after a night of indulging in alcohol.
Finally, remember to return to your room at a reasonable hour so you can get enough sleep and have a lot of energy to explore a new place the following day.
Personally, I have not been drinking alcohol since the 1st January 2009. A New Year’s resolution turned into a new lifestyle habit. No alcohol. And to be honest, I feel way better without it.
5. Remember to have fun
It can be challenging to work out, eat healthy, and drink responsibly while you’re out trying to enjoy yourself. However, if you treat these tips as a way to supplement your travel experience, then it’ll be easier to have fun. After all, if your body and mind are both sound, you can do and explore more things that are beyond your initial itinerary.
Although traveling does give you an excuse to let loose, it doesn’t mean that you should disregard your health. It’s important that you stay fit and healthy throughout your trip so you can make the most of it and return home feeling fresh and renewed.
TIP: Besides traveling, keeping fit is another very important part of my life. Did you know that I am a certified vegan and detox coach, too? I even wrote an ebook about How to be fit when traveling. It focuses on raw vegan diet (I’ve been eating mostly raw food since 2013 and it’s been one of the best decisions of my life). In the ebook you will also find great exercise tips from other 29 travelers.

Thanks so much for the tips! They definitely are reasonable. I like staying active while on holiday especially since we usually centre our trips around activities like hiking, swimming, snorkelling or have a specific race in another country nearby, so we train hard for it and then take a few days off to ‘enjoy the trip’.

The tips are great, but I have difficulty following them. I always look for hotels with a gym when planning trips, but I almost never use them. I really have to worry more about this.
