America’s most romantic getaways
Need some romantic vacation time with your other half? Some time to reconnect, recharge, and rekindle the spark? Well, the United States has plenty of destinations that offer the perfect combination of cozy accommodations, intimate restaurants, and more than enough places to spend some quality private time together.
The Smoky Mountains
What could be more romantic than cuddling together under a million stars with the beautiful Smoky Mountains as a backdrop? Maybe a glass of wine in the hot-tub or heart-shaped Jacuzzi in one of many luxury Gatlinburg cabins nestled in the foothills, or a classic love story on TV while a warm fire crackles in the background.
Fresh mountain air, reasonably priced luxury cabins, and a vibrant nightlife make the Smoky Mountains a popular destination for weddings, honeymoons, and romantic getaways. The unmatched level of privacy, comfort, and convenience that the cabins provide makes them perfect for quiet time together. Their location at the entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park makes them convenient to the park’s many scenic wonders as well.
Sedona, Arizona
Sedona’s stunning natural beauty, numerous spas, and local wineries make it the perfect spot for a romantic getaway. Enjoy a couple’s desert stone massage at the Sedona Day Spa. Therapy On the Rocks uses personalized myofascial release treatments for pain relief after a long day of hiking in the desert. Sedona also has some excellent wineries and a variety of tours where you can taste local offerings and take in the gorgeous red rock vistas.
Newport, Rhode Island
Gilded Age mansions, quaint inns, and spectacular ocean views make Newport, Rhode Island, one of our nation’s most romantic cities. Take a knee at Saint Mary’s – the church where John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier tied the knot. Enjoy a romantic dinner overlooking the harbor at the Castle Hill Inn, or at historic White Horse Tavern. Newport Cliff Walk and Ocean Drive also feature stunning views of the Atlantic ocean and lots of places to stop and grab a kiss. The meticulously restored Gilded Age mansions that line Bellevue Avenue offer daily tours that provide a glimpse into the daily lives of wealthy and not so wealthy turn-of-the-nineteenth century Americans.
New York City, New York
Few places have played home to more romantic movies than New York City. Share a tender moment at the top of the Empire State Building, where Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr met in the 1957 film “An Affair to Remember.” Head over to Brooklyn Heights and take a selfie or two in front of the setting for the 1987 romantic comedy Moonstruck.” Split a Frozen Hot Chocolate where John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale found love in the 2001 romantic comedy “Serendipity.”
Islamorada, Florida
Gentle trade winds, tree-lined beaches, and water on all sides provide this Florida Key with a tropical paradise feel. Meaning “Village of Islands”, Islamorada (pronounced “eye-lah-mor-ah-dah”) has several self-guided hikes that offer breathtaking views of the Gulf, and lots of secluded nooks along the way. Located on the Atlantic Ocean side of the island, the iconic Anne’s Beach, with its calm waters and gentle breezes, is the perfect place for a moonlight stroll. Islamorada also has a variety of waterfront restaurants that feature sunset views and a romantic vibe.
Charleston, South Carolina
Romance seekers come to Charleston, South Carolina, for its Southern charm, cobblestone streets, and horse-drawn carriages. Like Newport, Charleston accommodations include lots of quaint B&Bs and historic inns. Located inside the Belmond Charleston Place Hotel is the Charleston Grill, recently named “America’s Most Romantic Restaurant” by TripAdvisor reviews. Stroll Charleston’s French Quarter or beautiful waterfront after dinner to complete your day’s amorous experience.
Seaside, Florida
Pristine beaches, teal green waters, and colorful rental cottages make Seaside, Florida, the perfect destination for a romantic getaway. Hold hands and take an evening stroll on the beach, or walk around this idyllic town for a romantic dinner. Seaside’s pretty little downtown has more than a dozen restaurants and over forty-one shops and galleries. If you have marriage on your mind, Southern Living Magazine named the Chapel at Seaside one of the South’s Most Beautiful Chapels. Seaside vacation rentals include beachfront honeymoon cottages that offer a combination of modern convenience, quiet intimacy, and an Old World Florida vibe.
Napa Valley, California
Just outside San Francisco, rolling hills, abundant sunshine, and some of our country’s top vineyards make Napa Valley an excellent place for a romantic sojourn. Must-see wineries include the castle-themed Castello di Amorosa, as well as the Francis Ford Coppola Winery.
The Golden Haven hot springs resort offers massages, spa treatments, and even mud baths for couples. Along with the many spas, the Napa Valley also has numerous critically acclaimed restaurants perfect for an intimate dinner. You won’t have any trouble finding a romantic spot in the town of St. Helena, which bills itself as “Napa Valley’s Main Street”, and lives up to this with countless romantic spots ranging from charming courtyards to an underground bar.
Savannah, Georgia
Tree-lined streets, charming B&Bs, and twenty-two historic squares provide Savannah‘s romantic charm. Spanish Moss trees hang low and offer ample shade on steamy-hot days. Accommodations in Savanna include lots of cozy B&Bs and converted mansions like the Hamilton-Turner and Gastonion inns. Tree-lined squares surrounded by historic buildings add to Savannah’s appeal. Look hard enough and you just might find a bench made famous in the movie “Forest Gump”. Nearby Tybee Island offers amazing sunsets, and an occasional dolphin sighting, as well.
