Berlin architecture
One of the most interesting places to go in Germany is Berlin, which is the capital city. Berlin is also the largest city in the country and besides famous art, has a lot to offer to those visiting it. If you’ve decided to rent one of the many Berlin for a few days so you can explore the city, you definitely won’t want to forget to enjoy the greatest Berlin architecture. If you’re not sure where to get started, here are a few of the top architectural wonders you’ll want to see while you are visiting Berlin.
Berlin Philharmonic Concert Hall
One of the best places to visit if you’re interested in Berlin architecture is the Berlin Philharmonic Concert Hall. Hans Scharoun was the one who designed the hall and it was finished back in 1063. The building was built to replace the previous hall, which was totally destroyed during WWII. The new Philharmonic Concert Hall has a furturistic and organic appeal and includes two auditoriums. The building is done in a metal that is a soft yellow to go along with the other natural landscape around it.
New National Gallery
Another of the exciting Berlin architecture buildings to see is the New National Gallery. This building is totally different from the concert hall and it has an elegant, solemn sense to it. It is one of van der Rohe’s latest works and is considered to be one of his more extreme works. Some art is included within the stone plinth and many describe the building as temple like and chilly.
The Fernsehturm
Of course, you definitely won’t want to forget to visit the Fernsehturm if you’re interested in seeing the exquisite architecture the city of Berlin has to offer. This building, which basically translates as a “television tower” is located in Alexanderplatz. It was the former German Democratic Republic that constructed it from 1965 to 1969. The original design came from Jorg Streitparth and Hermann Henselmann, but later Herbert Aust and Walter Herzog would both add their ideas as well. When first built, it was only 365 meters tall, but in the 1990s, a new antennae was added, which added another three meters to its height. Now it happens to be Germany’s tallest structure and it can be seen from all over the city of Berlin.
Schloss Charlottenburg
You’ll no doubt want to take some time to visit the Schloss Charlottenburg while you are in Berlin, since it happens to be Berlin’s largest palace. The original palace was built near the end of the 17th century, but during the 18th century it was expanded. Sophie Charlotte commissioned the palace and Johann Arnold Nering was the architect that designed it. Overall, the style of the castle is considered to be Barouqe, but Corinthian pilasters decorate the façade. It was reconstructed after WWII as well, so there have been some changes.
These are just a few of the most popular places to visit if you’re interested in Berlin architecture. Some other great places to check out include Rotes Rathaus, Peter Eisenman’s Holocaust Memorial, and the DZ Bank building. If you’re staying in Berlin, you’ll probably find that many of these buildings are a short distance from where you’re staying, so it will be easy to enjoy the great architecture the city has to offer.
