Best things to do in South Africa’s most popular cities
Bustling Johannesburg, Gauteng
The ‘City of Gold’ really has it all, from wildlife experiences such as the famous Lion Park, to art galleries, historical museums, nightlife and fine dining, world class shopping, casinos and amusement parks, and much, much more.
One of the most interesting attractions for locals and international visitors alike is The Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage Site which is so much more than your typical museum. The name comes from the fact that the Sterkfontein caves above which the site is located have produced more than a third of early hominid fossils ever found prior to 2010. One of the most notable finds here include the 2.3 million year old Australopithecus africanus, or “Mrs. Ples” as the locals call her, as well as several other hominid fossils which date back as far as 3.5 million years. It’s an amazing journey back into the very beginnings of our species, and will delight kids and adults alike. Throw in some adventure activities, animal sanctuaries and fine dining opportunities right on site, and it’s easy to see why so many visitors flock to this special place.
The Mother City – Cape Town, Western Cape
With so much culture and natural beauty rolled up into one city, even a lifetime really isn’t enough to take it all in! But if you’re only visiting for a short while, then here are some of the attractions you really must try and squeeze in:

Historical Graaff-Reinet, Eastern Cape
The oldest town in the Eastern Cape and the fourth oldest in South Africa, Graaff-Reinet is the place to be if you’re looking to explore the early history of the country. Packed with fascinating museums, old churches and monuments, you even have the opportunity to ride in the little blue railway trolley, nicknamed Tubby, on the Blaauwater Railway – a truly unique way to appreciate the stunning Lootsberg landscape before enjoying a picnic at Klipspringer Cottage.
Samara game reserve offers luxury lodges perfect for a romantic getaway or family break, and the Camdeboo National Park with its eerie rocky landscape is also on your doorstep when you visit Graaff-Reinet.
Bloemfontein, Orange Free State
South Africa’s judicial capital and the seventh largest city in the country, Bloemfontein was also the birthplace of the African National Congress. Rich in history, it’s also a very budget friendly option, with loads of free and very inexpensive activities available.
