Photo essay from Cejar and Piedra lagoon
Visiting San Pedro de Atacama, I had a chance to explore the Altiplanic Lagoons there in the morning and in the afternoon go to relax to Cejar and Piedra lagoon.
Cejar Lagoon is located in the altiplane Andino del Norte de Chile in the place called Salar de Atacama – Atacama Salt Flat. The lagoon was formed by the progressive accumulation of salts precipitated from an old salty lake. Close by there is Laguna Piedra.
Laguna Piedra – Stone Lagoon is a 40 metre deep lagoon where you can swim – you literally float because of the high concentration of salts. Forget about swimming, it is impossible! It is surrounded by beautiful nature, the Andes with the volcanoes Licancabur, Lascar and Corona.
There are another 2 lagoons on the left of Piedra Lagoon which are not deep.
All the lagoons here appeared slowly – they are of volcanic origin and the sediments. The water there is from the rain and partly the subterranean water. You can see around some flamingoes, ducks or if you are lucky, a fox as well.
With the Sun, Cejar and Piedra lagoon change their colour to turquoise blue.
In between the lagoons in the back, you can find healing mud and use it for your body to get a smoother skin like I did. It was just me and two more crazy people with the mud on so everyone was staring at us. And it was there when I was walking, the mud started to dry up, I started to walk like a robot and I heard from one of the lagoons guys shouting in Slovak slang TY KOKSO, look at that nice funny girl!
Unbelievable, yes, there I met a group of Slovak astronomers :)
It was funny to let the mud get completely dry on me and then just jump into the lagoon to wash it away. It reminded me Mexico and my trip to Laguna de Coyuca where me and Julio Iglesias used the healing mud.
We finished the tour with some snacks our guide Marco prepared for us. We got drinks and we could try pisco sour, a traditional alcoholic beverage of Chile, with some chips and peanuts.
Tips:
- don’t get water into your eyes, it really hurts
- wash up with normal fresh water afterwards – the tour guide should bring it for you
- don’t walk bare-foot as you can cut your feet by the salt crystals
- to get to the lagoons is possible with a travel agency, rent a car, or by bike
- it is prohibited to smoke
- camping is prohibited
- use the sun protection, the Sun is really strong in here
- be careful when going out of the water, at the edge you can cut your feet
