My first time in Mexico
When I quit my job of stewardess on the 5th March 2011 and came to Mexico on my own on 5 days after this year, it was my first time ever I visited this country full of history, historical sites, contrasts, extremes, mixed people, spicy food, wild animals and amazing turquoise beaches.
But Mexico for me meant a lot. And it was not just the first time I went there, but Mexico was MY FIRST TIME in many things. This is the list of all ‘the first time’ for me there (almost all I mean, but some do not belong online :))
- first time I saw iguanas
- it is very weird, but it was my first transatlantic flight
- I swam in a sinkhole (cenote in Spanish)
- I swam in the Caribbean sea
- I swam in the Pacific Ocean (in San Blas, Nayarit)
- I visited native inhabitants in the jungle
- I lost fear of snorkel and started enjoying it for the first time
- I used mud from under a tree as a body soap and then washed it all out in a waterfall
- I played with wild monkeys in a jungle
- I did ultralight flight and learned to drive it on the ground by myself
- I did paragliding flight
- I climbed a pyramid
- I tried temazcal – something like sauna but with special characteristics of native Americans’ baths
- I did zip-line
- I stayed in a hotel where a night costs 300 American dollars for free for the first time – hotel Matilda
- I started to like German people
- I listened to proper Mexican mariachi in Mexico
- I saw a serenade
- a servant/housemaid served me breakfast like in a telenovela
- I did not cook – not even once for the 3 continuous months
- my laptop was stolen (and hopefully was for the last time as well!)
- I did not buy any snowballs from a trip as they do not sell them in Mexico
- I was all covered with healing mud
- I stayed over in the jungle
- I played with native American children
- I slept in a hammock
- I learned funny Mexican Spanish
- I had more than 40 mosquito bites at once (I so hate them!!)
- I was hit by the sea waves so much TWICE I could not breathe and found myself lying at the coast with half bikini off, hair in my mouth and sand in all the holes
- I saw the man of my dreams in person (I mean how I always wanted a man to look like physically) – how come he does exist???
- I tasted jícama
- I saw crocodiles living in the port among the boats of Ixtapa without hurting anyone
- I did not use nail polish nor eye cream for 3 months at all
- I was given a tissue to dry up my hands after using the toilet
- I had to throw the used toilet paper into a bin and not into the toilet itself
- I saw so many topes – speed bumps everywhere
- I did rappel – in a volcano crater
- I swam in a volcano crater
- a guy opened the car door for me and waited for me to sit down, then closed it
- I saw a sun dog – a rainbow around the Sun
Just the simple points in here, great memories in my heart though. My first time in Mexico …

Comment@ José M Wong:
That’s a typical problem we all encounter, I haven’t seen so many things in my home country either. But unfortunately, this time I will spend just a week in Mexico.

I am not kidding :P It is because I spent every day just traveling and visiting places, and sometimes there are 3 cenotes close to each other so you manage to see them in a day :)

15 cenotes!? I can’t believe you did so much in 3 months. I’ve been here for 2 years, and even though I travel a lot, it seems like I spend half the time in a bus or car.
Anyway looking forward to the cenotes, and hopefully some more Mayan ruin posts….

No Dave, I did much more during the 3 months in Mexico, but not everything was for the first time for me and not everything should be online :D Thanks for stopping by!

What a great list! You discovered so many of the best things about Mexico! Which cenotes did you swim in? And do you have any blog posts about them? Did you go to Samula and X’Keken?

Philip, I visited around 15 different cenotes around the Yucatan peninsula, but lost pictures of most of them with my stolen laptop :( Have the pics only of Rio Secreto and KantunChi I went to afterwards, so soon will upload them :)
