Fraser Island: A 4X4 Adventure
A trip to Australia can be a holiday of a lifetime, and a visit to Fraser Island is a must! Flights, accommodation, dining out and all those holiday essentials can make a holiday to Oz an expensive one, so make sure you get saving well in advance. Looking for things to do whilst on Fraser Island? Read on!
4X4 Tour
The best way to see this spectacular island is in a 4×4 vehicle. Rugged rainforest terrain and stunning beach landscapes are impossible to navigate in a normal vehicle, so a 4×4 allows you to cover the 90 miles of beautiful coastline. Hire companies will usually provide you with maps of the island and recommended routes, as well as safety information and tide times. If you’re feeling nervous about driving yourself, opt instead for a specialized 4×4 tour which will take in sights like Lake McKenzie, Lake Boomanjin and Lake Allom.
Wildlife Spotting
Noisy 4×4 vehicles can disrupt shy wildlife, so the best way to catch sight of animals and birds is on foot. Make sure you pack a pair of binoculars and have a camera on hand to snap some of Fraser Island’s more elusive inhabitants. Look out for dingoes, wallabies, possums and many more – the island is home to 47 different species of mammal! Take to the water and see if you can spy rays, turtles and dolphins. Majestic whales can be seen from July to November, during which time their migration route takes in the waters surrounding Fraser Island.
Camping Out
There are six national park campgrounds on Fraser Island as well as private sites. Basic facilities like showers, barbeques, toilets, tap water and picnic tables are provided so you can enjoy the great outdoors in the most natural way possible. Make sure you book ahead for the most popular national park sites like Waddy Point, Central Station, One Tree Rocks beach camping Zone and Dundubar. Special permits also have to be purchased in advance.
Gone Fishing
The waters of Fraser Island are rich in marine life, and that includes a number of tasty fish species! The bays boast some of the world’s best beach fishing, with whiting and bream in abundance, all year round. After an exhilarating ride in a 4×4, and a tiring rainforest trek, why not spend a relaxing afternoon fishing followed by a delicious fish supper.
Any trip to Australia should take in the sights, sounds and tastes of Fraser Island. From spectacular landscapes to cute furry animals, the isle is sure to deliver an unforgettable holiday.

Very cool – having never traveled to Australia before, I’ve only heard of the major sights – Great Barrier Reef, Ayers Rock, Sydney, etc. As an outdoor enthusiast, I’m grateful that you’ve brought my attention to Fraser Island! Any other suggestions for Camping/Hiking places in Australia?
