While it’s been regularly listed as one of the most livable countries around the globe over the years, Canada also has a lot to offer temporary visitors who want to check out its many charms while on vacation. From mountains and glaciers to bustling cities, iconic natural wonders, historic landmarks, and wildlife experiences, this North American nation has something for everyone. Read on for some of the key reasons why you should think about taking a trip to Canada in 2018 and beyond.

Key reasons to visit Canada

See Polar Bears

They’re only found in a few locations on the planet, and are becoming increasingly endangered, so the majestic polar bears are on the must-see list of many people. To catch these creatures going about their day, head to the region of Hudson Bay, near Churchill, in the Canadian province of Manitoba. Tours can usually be booked for the months of November or March, when the white marine mammals are more likely to be out and about.

You can try to catch sight of these curious creatures from a tundra buggy vehicle specially designed to protect tourists while still giving them viewing access. The highest concentration of polar bear dens is in Hudson Bay, so a Canadian tour provides you with one of the best chances to see the creatures, particularly cubs with their mothers, before climate change leads to their extinction.

Check Out Niagara Falls

Another amazing opportunity that’s well worth the trip to Canada is seeing the natural wonder that is Niagara Falls. While many people think this iconic site is one huge waterfall, it’s actually three separate ones, the Horseshoe Falls, the American Falls, and the Bridal Veil Falls. They’re located on the Canadian-American border between Ontario and New York, and famous not because they’re the highest in the world, but because of the massive amounts of water which flow through them – there are actually millions of cubic feet gushing over the edge every minute.

To get a really good look at the Falls, start by checking out hotels near Niagara Falls which boast floor-to-ceiling windows in the bedrooms, for uninterrupted views. In addition, consider hopping on one of the popular boat tours which run in the area, such as the Maid of the Mist operation. Don’t miss seeing the Falls turn all sorts of colors at night, too, when the Niagara Falls Illumination and Fireworks show is on. Your best bet is to purchase a ticket on the Niagara SkyWheel, so you can see the amazing sight from the air.

Ride the iconic Rocky Mountaineer

On the west coast of Canada, you’ll find another one of Canada’s most famous attractions, this time something man-made. The Rocky Mountaineer Train is one of the most well-regarded rail travel options in the world, and is a five-star operator that takes passengers through some of the most beautiful parts of British Columbia and Alberta.

On the Mountaineer’s journeys, you can travel to photogenic spots like Whistler (the site of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games), Banff, Jasper, and Lake Louise. Along the way you’ll spot Canadian scenery like snow-covered mountains; glacier-fed, crystal-clear lakes; pine forests; narrow bridges which run over epic gorges; and waterfalls. You even have the chance to see creatures like grizzly bears and moose. You won’t miss any of the view from inside the train either, with the carriages designed with glass windows not just on both sides but also above. In addition, guests are treated to regular commentary along the way.

Explore picturesque Quebec City

If you’re keen to take in some lovely architecture, and to feel like you have stepped back in time or entered Europe while you’re still in Canada, a visit to the predominantly French-styled (and French speaking) Quebec City is a must.

Located in the province of Quebec, this picturesque destination boasts, in the Old Walled City in particular, streets with cobblestones, flower boxes, painted signs hanging from building eaves, and cast-iron lanterns. Above it all towers the much-photographed Chateau Frontenac. An iconic building in the region, the Chateau is a historic hotel and the perfect spot for either an overnight stay, or a memorable morning or afternoon tea.

Fall in love with Prince Edward Island

Lastly, on the east coast of Canada is a little island which is sure to have you falling in love within minutes. Prince Edward Island is known by many book lovers because it provided the setting for the popular children’s book series, Anne of Green Gables. On top of feeling like you’re Anne for a time though, while you’re in P.E.I, as it’s called, you can also enjoy fresh seafood (especially oysters and lobster), and attend art and music festivals. In addition, the island is also known for its many pretty vintage lighthouses which are scatted across the coastline.
