New York, New York, a helluva town
As Debauvoir once so astutely observed, there is something in the New York air that makes sleep useless. This North American metropolis caters to almost all tastes and must be seen to be believed.
From the emanating lights of Time Square to the towering representation of America’s liberty, NYC has a magic all its own. Whether comfortable amongst the cultural set or the rattle and hum of Brooklyn’s hip trendsetters, NY provides it’s visitors with a memorable trip they are not likely to forget.
Given New York’s popularity, securing accommodation can at times, especially in peak season, prove difficult. There are though many options available, including hotels and hostels however, in order to bypass the tourist traffic, perhaps consider an another route, these include couchsurfing andalternative agencies offering a whole host of exciting and unique accommodation options. The latter can prove especially fruitful, as the focus of such agencies is often based upon the local exchange of knowledge. Leasing local apartments in New York or hotels such as Library Hotel and worldwide is becoming an ever increasing trend among savvy travelers.
Given that NY is North America’s most populous city and is famously frequented by all manner of interesting individuals this city is of course no exception to the trend. In my experience, it can really pay off trying to make that local connection. Being lost in Williamsburg at 2 am is no fun, I can tell you.
Other things you may want to consider doing in New York include riding the Staten island ferry. There is, admittedly, not an awful lot to fulfill your time with once you are there, however the journey itself is quite beautiful. Talking of that, another attraction that cannot be missed is Central Park, arguably the hub of NYC, here you will find almost every type of recreational activity. While at central park it may too be worth your while hopping over to the Guggenheim and/or the MET.
The former can be pricey, however if you choose to go on one of its donation days you will surely enjoy one of the finest collections of modern art in America if not the world for a fraction of the normal cost. Perhaps you will not want to fill your days entirely with cultural pursuits, if this is the case, why not catch the ‘L’ train down to Brooklyn and party the night away in one of its many quirky and eccentric bars.
Some of particular merit are Silent Barn, here you will find all manner of interesting musical acts and the cake shop. The latter not only serves up delicious cakes, as the name would suggest, but also many live music events. There is even a record shop in the back, what more could you want?
The beauty of NYC is that you do not have to plan anything in particular to get the absolute most out of the city. It provides its visitors with everything one could want at every corner. Whether that be Michelin star restaurants, hip Brooklyn dive bars, shopping in abundance, towering feats of architectural brilliance or some of the finest educational institutes in America, once you visit NYC you will surely wish to return again and again. With airfares becoming cheaper and cheaper there really is no excuse not to take a week from work and explore the big apple in all its beauty and charm.
