Photo of the week – rainbow around the Sun sun dog – a miracle
On the 1st of June 2011 we went to visit pyramid of Cholula with my 3 friends.
Once we parked the car, one of them was asking over and over again ”Have you seen the Sun?”
So we started to look up at the Sun with the sunglasses on.
And this is what we saw:
It was noon, the Sun was just straight up and the sky was full of clouds, but no rain. There was a rainbow all around the Sun. I have never seen anything like this. Have you?
Only later on I was explained how this happened – the rainbow around the Sun SUN DOG (no idea why it’s called that way) and it’s caused by ice crystals in the atmosphere.

We get these on really cold days on the parries (-40C). Usually the top and bottom are cut off by clouds and the earth, so you get two half rainbows on either side of the sun. We call them “sun dogs” for some reason.
