Village Lesnica, Gorals and wooden sculptures
One of the 9 National parks of Slovakia is Pieniny. It is situated in the North of the country, at the border with Poland, East of the highest Slovak mountains High Tatras.
One of the most visited places in Pieniny is a village Lesnica, where you can get from Červený Kláštor.
Lesnica is located in the area called Zamagurie and has been inhabited for a long time by the so called Gorals (Gorali in Slovak) – mountain people, shepherds and peasants. Their tradition can be seen nowadays in Lesnica by more ways.
First, it is the traditional dress that some locals working in the tourism wear. Second, horses, sheep and wooden houses. Third, wooden rafts on Dunajec river (called plte in Slovak). And fourth, added just a couple of years ago, are the wooden sculptures by the sculptor Czyril Kocúrek.
The wooden sculptures became a big attraction and lots of visitors come to Lesnica mostly in summer time to enjoy this unique statues representing some famous Gorals.
Once you admire all the big wooden statues and breathe the fresh air, you can try traditional Slovak and Goral meals in the cottage Chata Pieniny, have a picnic or listen to the typical Goral music.
What you should do when in Lesnica is to take a walk or cycle down along Dunajec river to the closest village Szczawnica which lies already in Poland just about 500 m from Lesnica. It is very popular.
