Georgia is growing in popularity as an awesome travel destination in the Caucasus. Getting to the country can be tricky, and you may need some help from www.buddyloans.com to book the flights. But you’ll find the country to be affordable, hospitable, and full of friendly locals. Here are a few things to do in Tbilisi.
What to do in Tbilisi Georgia
Take the Tbilisi Free Walking Tour
Free walking tours are popular in most cities around the world, which is an excellent way to see the sites and meet other travelers. It usually takes between two and a half to three hours depending on how big the city is. Even though it’s free, a tip is highly appreciated.
Try Khinkali and Khachapuri
Most Georgians would recommend visitors to try their local delicacy. Khinkali are dumplings usually stuffed with potatoes or meat while Khachapuri is bread filled with cheese that’s best eaten fresh out the oven. Both are a tasty treat after a day of walking and exploring Tbilisi. Lots of restaurants serve both Khinkali and Khachapuri at reasonable prices.
Hike up Mt Mtatsminda
There are two ways to get to this mountain: one is to take the funicular or challenge yourself to hike up the steps. If you go by foot, you’ll first head to the Mtatsminda Pantheon. Follow the sign to Mtatminda Park, and it will take you to the top at the amusement park. It’s a challenging uphill climb, but the views are worth it. Georgia is a stunning country, still unknown to many.
Visit Narikala Fortress
Another place with a fantastic view of the Kura River and the iconic Bridge of Peace. On this hill stands the monumental statue of Kartlis Deda or Mother of Georgia holding her sword in one hand and a cup of wine in the other. It’s also possible to take the cable car up for a small fee and walk back down through the old town of Tbilisi.
Visit Anchiskhati Basilica
Anchiskhati Basilica of St Mary, the oldest surviving Orthodox Church in Tbilisi, dates back to the sixth century under King Dachi of Iberia. This church was damaged and rebuilt a few times between the 15th and 17th centuries.
See the Tbilisi Sea and The Chronicles of Georgia
A reservoir located away from the centre is worth a half day trip. You’ll need to take the metro to Ghrmaghele Station and either get a taxi or walk. There isn’t much of a beach, but locals come to swim and sunbathe. From here, a ‘Stonehenge’ like structure is visible in the distance. It’s possible to walk from the reservoir to get to the Chronicles of Georgia; a monument created by local artist Zurab Tsereteli. Both attractions are free to visit.
Take a Day Trip to Mtskheta
Located about 30 kilometres from Tbilisi is one of the oldest cities in Georgia that’s worth a day trip. Microbuses or ‘Mashrutkas’ are available daily at the bus station near Didube Metro Station. Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and Jvari Monastery are the famous places to visit in this small town.
Make the Most of Tbilisi
Experience the food and the older side of Tbilisi while enjoying great views from the mountains and hills. Plan your trip well to ensure you have enough time to explore this beautiful city in the Caucasus region.
